Calvary used to describe a state of extreme physical or mental suffering as well, which is an allusion to the suffering of Christ. The name was used to refer a suffering because it was mentioned on all four canonical Gospels as the hill outside Jerusalem which is traditionally held to be the location of the crucifixion of Jesus.

And this is an ode to my personal calvary.
